School Tours https://oxmountainglamping.ie/services/school-tours/ Mon, 25 Dec 2017 12:31:18 +0000 http://oxmountainadventurecamp.com/?post_type=cpt_services&p=182 The Ox Mountain Adventure Camp is a family run business located in the heart of Ox Mountains surrounded by stunning views of the hills and valley which date back over 900 million years in time. The rich supply of wildlife, wildflowers, forest and blanket bog vistas ensures your group get a true feeling of being “in the wild”.

Our site is approximately 6 miles from Tubbercurry and fully secure behind our gates, on-site we have campfire facility’s as well as toilets, washroom, kitchen and changing areas.

We start at our sites adjacent intact Mass Rock where students can see first-hand how people practised the Roman Catholic religion in darker periods of Ireland’s past.

Next we move through a forest trail to explore the wildlife and trees of the woodlands and see what forest dwellers your group can discover. Stop off at our bushcraft shelter where students can learn about its construction using only the woodland resource’s around us and have a quick relax on our “bush bed”.

From the woodland, we move into our base campsite where the group can use the site facilities and prepare for our guided hike. We set off to a hilltop peek knowing locally as ‘The Robbers Den’ to sample the all-round views of the valley while the group will hear and learn about blanket bog life and visit boulder size rocks to learn about mountain building and the effects of the ice age.

Weather permitting, we enjoy our hilltop picnic at the Robbers Den. Students are asked to bring a normal school lunch.

On return to base camp, students will be split up into different groups to sample our traditional games on the camping grounds. Should the weather not be in our favour we run this section of the day in our Bunk ‘n’ Barn building.

We conclude the day by lighting our sites campfire which the group can sit by on our campfire-style log seating and enjoy some complimentary marshmallow’s to roast and share the day’s stories. (Weather permitting)

All common child protection protocols are followed throughout.

Price € 20.00 per child

Gaisce Adventure Trip https://oxmountainglamping.ie/services/gaisce-adventure/ https://oxmountainglamping.ie/services/gaisce-adventure/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 12:29:18 +0000 http://oxmountainadventurecamp.com/?post_type=cpt_services&p=180 We offer a large camping area which is supported by its own cabin, fitted with electricity, toilet and a kitchen sink. Students can use the cabin services without needing to leave the campsite area.

Our fire pit also sits beside the camping area is providing students with the opportunity to enjoy some campfire fun at night.

We also provide tents for students which they erect or ‘pitch’ themselves.

The campsite like the entire Ox Mountain Adventure Camp is securely located behind our electric gates and fencing and our remote location provides added security and tranquility for students.

For adverse weather conditions, our fitted out Bunk ‘n’ Barn facility can be used by students.

The Bunk ‘n’ Barn building comes complete with fitted wooden bunks.

Toilet and washroom area, kitchen sink and fridge are also fitted to the building.

Students can relax in the building passing any severe weather conditions dry, warm and safe with a few boards or table games.

We also have a large BBQ unit for students to prepare their own food under supervision by us, thus by further promoting the self-reliance ethos of the Gaisce Award. To comply with the require walking distances for the Gaisce Award we enjoy the choice of several routes in our area.

The main route consists of traversing a hilltop peek leading to forest trail and eventually joining the famous ‘Sligo Way’. A loop around Easky Lough brings students to their furthest point from the camp at which point a quiet country road leads us back to base camp and some well-needed dinner.

Secondary routes for shorter distances include a hike to a hilltop peak knowing locally as the ‘Robbers Den’ descending into a close-quarters forest pass which corals students to the promised land of a ‘hardcore trail’ leading back to base camp.

Other routes include hikes to picturesque hidden hilltop lakes and the locally famous ‘Stirring Rock’.

All hikes are fully supervised and led by experienced guides throughout and great care is taken in regards student safety.

Students can also learn about our mountain environment on a casual basis as we traverse the routes.

For student downtime, our site connects to an adjacent forest with clear trail walks and leads to the local Mass Rock Site which can be visited within a 5-minute walk.
